The Area
We operate from our base in the picturesque coastal village of Wilderness, on the Garden Route that runs along the East Coast of South Africa. It is renowned for its vast stretches of beaches, its peace and tranquillity and the absence of windswept headlands and wild, stormy seas. There are twenty-four flying sites – ranging from easy coastal soaring to cross-country thermal sites – within just an hour’s drive, making our location a popular spot for free flying enthusiasts from around the world.
Our nearest airport is located in George (20km to the northwest) although some of our guests fly into Port Elizabeth (365km to the east) or Cape Town (465km to the west). We are also just 45km to the east of the world-famous town of Knysna.
Wilderness lies 15km east of the city of George, between the Kaaimans River in the west and the Goukamma Nature Reserve in the east. It is bordered by the Outeniqua Mountains in the north and the Indian Ocean in the south and surrounded by lakes, lagoons, forests, cliffs, rivers and beaches, making it ideal for nature and water sport enthusiasts looking to vacation off the beaten track. The tradition of holidaying and hospitality, that Wilderness has become well known for, dates as far back as the 1800s when the establishment of a boarding house was the first step towards Wilderness becoming a world-renowned resort destination.
